Rokoko Studio Preview - Getting Started

In this article:

Rokoko Studio Preview gives you access to exciting new features that are being developed here at Rokoko. The software will continue to expand and shape into an irreplaceable tool in your mocap workflow. Below are instructions on how to use the current features.

You can download Rokoko Studio Preview by clicking here

Getting Started

After downloading and opening Rokoko Studio Preview, you will be prompted to sign in. Use your existing Rokoko ID (or create one if you haven't already).

Once signed in, Rokoko Studio Preview will retrieve all scenes that you have recorded in Rokoko Studio. Depending on the number of scenes created and the clip length, this may take some time to load. It is NOT recommended to run Rokoko Studio at the same time as Rokoko Studio Preview.

Once your scenes have loaded, double click on the scene that you wish to make edits to. At the moment, there are two key features available in Studio Preview - a Smoothing filter, and Loopable segments.

Smoothing

You can apply the smoothing filter to an entire clip, or just a small segment that needs fine tuning. To do this:

  1. Select the clip you wish to work with.
  2. Using the smoothing track in the timeline, select the segment you wish to apply the smoothing filter to.

  3. You can extend or shorten the segment by clicking and dragging the edges.

  4. The smoothing filter is automatically applied. But you have control over its strength and where it is applied to. Using the controls on the right hand side of the timeline, you can use the toggle to increase or decrease the amount of smoothing being applied to the clip.

You can also choose to apply smoothing to the full body, upper body, lower body, or hands.

  5. Review the playback, and when you're happy with your changes, click 'Export Clip'!

Looping

To get started with the looping feature:

  1. Select the scene you wish to import and work on in Rokoko Studio Preview.
  2. Once the scene has loaded, click on the looping track in the timeline to add a segment.

  3. Next you can click and drag the edges of the segment to capture the movement you wish to loop. Ideally, you want the beginning of the segment and the end of the segment to match somewhat (for example, if it's a walk cycle you wish to loop, you would cut the segment to begin right before your foot leaves the ground, and end when the foot touches the ground again).

  4. Once you've got your segment, hit play and you'll notice that the segment is now repeating.

  5. Now it's time to hit the 'Apply Magic Loop' button on the right hand side of the timeline. This will smoothen the start and end points of the segment to make them seamlessly loop together.

You'll also see that you have some options to choose from before exporting the segment:

Transition Time

This controls the duration of the transition and how many of the keyframes at the end of the segment get blended into the beginning of the segment.

Close Loop

This closes the loop by blending the end of segment into the beginning, so that the start and end position match.

Lock to Axis

This rotates your character to the axis closest to the direction of the motion, meaning that any offset is corrected. The axis for the alignment is automatically calculated to be the axis the character is moving more towards in the segment. This is useful for walk cycles and general motion towards a specific direction.

Start From Origin

This ensures that the character will be positioned at (0, 0, 0) at the beginning of the motion.

To export your loop (and not the entire clip) simply right click on the segment in your timeline, and hit 'Export.'
