In this article:

A collection of the most commonly asked questions, and their associated answers.

What resolutions/framerates are available from the Headcam?

The Headcam has three different resolutions and framerates available.

  • 1200p @ 60/30fps - This is the preset for the Headcam
  • 960p @ 60/30fps - This can be selected in another programme (such as Accuface)
  • 768p @ 60/30fps - This can be selected in another programme (such as Accuface)
How much does the Headcam weigh?
The Headcam weighs approximately 240 grams.
How does the Headcam connect to a capture device?
The Headcam is attached to a USB cable. This cable needs to be plugged into an Android smartphone or a computer. A list of specifications and device recommendations can be found here
Can the Headcam record videos or provide facial animation on its own?

No, the Headcam needs to be plugged into a device that can record videos from external devices, or process live camera input to facial animation, such as the Rokoko Face Capture app, Reallusion Accuface, etc.

Can I use the Face Capture app on Android with the built-in phone camera or other external cameras?
No, the Face Capture app for Android will only allow face capture using the Rokoko Headcam. This is because we have optimized our facial solver algorithm to the steady, high-quality image that comes from the Headcam.
Can I use the Headcam with the Face Capture app for iPhone?
No, this will only be possible on Android. This is due to the fact that external cameras are not supported on iPhones.
Can I use the Face Capture app on Android without a Headcam?

You will not be able to capture or record facial animations using the app unless you are using a Headcam. However, the app also includes features that can be used to remotely control certain features in Rokoko Studio - such as starting/stopping recordings and initiating calibrations. A Headcam is not required to use these remote features of the app.

Can I use multiple Headcams at the same time in Rokoko Studio?

Yes, as long as each Headcam is connected to different Android phones running the Face Capture app, then Rokoko Studio can pair with any number of phones and receive the Face Capture stream.

We officially support up to three Actors using a full-performance setup (body, hands, face) at once, but you may be able to have more active Face Capture streams at once from different phones. Performance and quality will then also depend greatly on your network performance and bandwidth, as well as the processing power and memory of the computer running Rokoko Studio.

If I put my Android phone in e.g. my pocket while doing Face Capture with the Headcam, how do I ensure it won’t perform accidental button presses or drain my phone battery?

We expect most Headcam / Face Capture users to put their phone away once the initial setup has been done and while performing, recording or livestreaming.

To avoid accidental button presses, which could e.g. disconnect from Rokoko Studio, you can turn on a “pocket” mode in the Android app, where you will have to perform a more specific interaction to unlock it. It's important to note however, that OS level interactions can still pause the app.

When in “pocket” mode, the app will reduce its processing needs by e.g. turning off the live video feed, which should help reduce the risk of overheating or battery draining. However, processing of the Headcam video feed to facial animation will always happen and be computed on the phone itself, as long as Face Capture is turned on.

Will I need a Rokoko subscription to use my Headcam?

You will be able to use your Headcam as any external camera within any application that can receive video input, without any additional fees.

To use the Headcam with our Face Capture app, converting the video feed to facial animation, sent to Rokoko Studio, you will need the Face Capture add-on, which is purchased and assigned on a per-seat basis.
