Who is this article relevant to?
This article is for anyone who wants to know how to have an active online router for internet connection and one active offline dedicated router connected to the computer at the same time
Introduction
Rokoko recommends purchasing a dedicated WiFi router for better performance and autonomy as per our recommendations here. The dedicated router should be connected to the computer using an ethernet cable using the LAN port on the back of the router.
- What happens when you also want a WiFi internet connection using your usual online router?
- How can you keep your WiFi internet connection while also having an ethernet connection using the offline dedicated router?
Solution
To keep your wireless internet connection stable and set up your offline wired router for your Rokoko Smartsuit Pro and Smartgloves:
- Connect the offline router to the PC via ethernet using the LAN port on the back of the router.
- Go to Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections or Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings from the left side list
- Right-click the Wifi adapter that you are using for the offline router (the name of the Access Point/Wifi name should be visible under the adapter) and click Properties
- Select the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties
- In the General tab click Advanced
- In the IP Settings uncheck the Automatic metric
- Type the number 1 in the Interface metric
Then, do the same for the Ethernet adapter. It’s exactly the same process. It is described below.
- Go back and this time right-click the Ethernet adapter that you are using for the offline router (the name of the Access Point/Wifi name should be visible under the adapter) and click Properties
- Select the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties
- In the General tab click Advanced
- In the IP Settings uncheck the Automatic metric
- Type the number 2 in the Interface metric
- Connect the offline router to the PC via ethernet using the LAN port on the back of the router.
- Go to Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections or Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings from the left side list
- Right-click the Ethernet adapter that you are using for the offline router (the name of the Access Point/Wifi name should be visible under the adapter) and click Properties
- Select the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties
- In the General tab click Advanced
- Find the Ethernet IP of your PC as shown here
- Enter that IP in the IP address as shown below.
Your IP should be different than the one used here.
The subnet mask will autofil. - Click OK
As per Apple's suport page here:
- On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Network in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
- Click the Action pop-up menu on the right, then choose Set Service Order.
- Drag services into the order we need. WiFi should be first and Ethernet second.
- Click OK.
A small note on what we did on the Windows side
Number 1 means that the Wifi adapter will be prioritized when internet access is requested and Ethernet will be the second option (hence the number 2) in the list.
